Improving the solubility of oral drugs in water using new ionic liquids

Chaired by José Esperança

Abstract

A large proportion of the available drugs is poorly soluble in water, showing reduced absorption after oral administration. One of the major challenges in the pharmaceutical industry is the development of new strategies to improve the solubility of drugs in water, thus increasing their bioavailability in the body.

The main objective is to use ionic liquids to upturn the aqueous solubility of the active pharmaceuticals. The first step is to synthesize non-toxic and biocompatible ionic liquids and thus to test the effect of the anion in the ionic liquid (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) as well as the length of the alkyl chain and the presence of distinct functional groups in the cation.

Short Bio

Patrícia Reis is an Auxiliary Researcher at the Alternative Fluids for Green Chemistry (AGC-Lab) Laboratory, at LAQV-REQUIMTE, FCT-UNL since 2017. She completed her PhD in Chemistry at IST-UTL in 2003. She performed research on organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis during the post doc, and worked in Alfama (pharmaceutical company) until 2012. Since then, she has worked in the synthesis of new ionic liquids and last year within the frame of a contract as Investigator FCT, she is developing the use of new ILs to solubilize oral drugs with low water solubility.
