Maria Manuel Marques, principal investigator at LAQV- FCT NOVA detailed an eﬃcient protocol to attain 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-azaindoles in one pot (Org. Lett. 2017 , 19, 5118). The described protocol consists of sequential N-arylation of amino-o-halopyridines, Sonogashira reaction, and cyclization to the desired product. This is a fast and elegant access to this challenging class of compounds and creates a new platform to access novel drug candidates or scaled synthesis of actual drugs.

The call for applications for the Doctoral Programme in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Applied to Chemistry, Materials and Biosciences, PTNMRPhD, is open from the 19th of December 2017 to the 15th of January 2018. There are NINE PhD fellowships available for highly motivated candidates that will be selected based on their educational background, academic qualification, research experience, motivation and scientific ability.
On 29th September from 18:00 to 24:00, researchers from the Chemistry Department - FCT NOVA will be at Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (MUHNAC) in Lisbon, with various activities.
Six European Projects, representing a total of 3 M€ for three years, have been awarded to Biochemical Engineering Lab, led by Maria Reis, full professor at FCT-NOVA. These projects are run in collaboration with other research units and industry companies, and aim to study the production of biodegradable bioplastics by bacteria.
The PTNMR was awarded 4,8 million euros as a result of a recent call to support Research Infrastructure projects included in the Portuguese Roadmap of Research Infrastructures. The funding will support highly qualified human resources and new equipment to carry out advanced research on catalytic processes, smart materials, biomedical devices or pharmaceutical drugs, a key factor for establishing leading industries in emergent areas.
