Highlights

PhD student Frederico Duarte, from the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Chemistry (PDQS), has been selected to participate in the 75th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, one of the most prestigious international scientific gatherings, bringing together Nobel Laureates and outstanding young researchers from around the world.

Beatriz Sorte, who holds a Master’s degree in Gastronomic Sciences, has been widely featured in the Mozambican media after becoming the first Mozambican to complete this academic degree in the field — a pioneering achievement that has been broadly recognized by several media outlets.

Last Friday, 13 March, Beatriz da Sorte Bernardo Adriano Muimela Maurício successfully defended her Master’s thesis in Gastronomic Sciences.

The study was coordinated by Maria João Romão and Cristiano Mota, researchers at UCIBIO at DQ-NOVA FCT. The first authors are Guilherme Vilela-Alves from UCIBIO at DQ-NOVA FCT and Rita Rebelo Manuel, supervised by Inês Cardoso Pereira from ITQB-NOVA.

The LeClanché, MMS and PaWER teams, composed of students from the Master's in Chemical and Biological Engineering programme, were the winners of the NOVA FCT BioChem Industry Challenge.

Research

Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit

UCIBIO’s key strength lies on its broad scope of fundamental and applied research standing at the interface of Chemistry and Biology to address pertinent questions at atomic, molecular, sub-cellular and cellular levels, including cell-to-cell interactions and population evolutionary dynamics.

Associated Lab. for Green Chemistry - Clean Technologies and Processes

LAQV ́s mission is to cooperate in a continuous, competent and efficient way to achieve a Sustainable development by promoting new technologies that aim to reduce or even eliminate undesirable substances in the design, production and uses of Chemicals.

Mechanical Engineering and Resource Sustainability Center

Created in 2013, MEtRICs (Mechanical Engineering and Resource Sustainability Center) emerged in the merger of two units: in part the Center for Mechanics and Materials Technologies - CT2M, of the University of Minho (UMinho) - and Environmental Biotechnology Unit - UBiA, of the New University of Lisbon (UNova). Its mission is to create scientific knowledge and provide technical solutions for a cleaner, safer and sustainable world. It aims to contribute to the social and economic benefits that come with a knowledge-based economy.

DQ

The Department of Chemistry, is a permanent organic unity of the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT / UNL), devoted to teaching, and scientific research and to provide services in areas of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering.

The Chemistry Department (DQ), Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa , founded in 1981, has recognized market implementation of education and employment, particularly so because of the novelty and specificity introduced by the course in Chemistry with which teaching at the School of Chemistry began in 1981.
