Kick-off Meeting of the CHImerASE Project

15-09-2014

Today, September 15, is the first meeting of the project “Integrated Platform for de novo Design and Development of a Chimeric Enzyme for high-value chemicals” (CHImerASE) granted by European Research Area (ERA) Industrial Biotechnology. The project involves a translational cooperation between Austria, Germany and Portugal. Cecília Roque, head of the Biomolecular Engineering Lab at UCIBIO - FCT/UNL, is one of the project leaders, together with Vlada B. Urlacher (Germany), Christian Gruber (Austria), Michael Breuer (Germany) and Helmut Schwab (Austria). The project is coordinated by Ricardo Branco, post-doc of the Biomolecular Engineering Lab at UCIBIO - FCT/UNL.

The CHImerASE project started on July, and intends to develop a platform for the design of chimeric enzymes applied to new biotransformation steps. The team aims to deliver an efficient de novo designed enzyme to accomplish a high value industrial transformation that is currently only accessible via a laborious conventional chemical process. The consortium partners strongly believe that such innovative approach will represent a breakthrough in the biocatalysis field with a significant impact at industrial, economical and environmental levels.
