Prof. Dr. Robert Huber, Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1988, at FCT-UNL

30-06-2014

Prof. Dr. Robert Huber from Max-Planck-Institut für Biochemie in Germany gave a seminar at the library auditorium, as part of the Cycle of Conferences on Crystallography, within the scope of the International Year of Crystallography. Prof. Dr. Robert Huber visited the laboratories of Chemistry Department during the morning, and researchers had the opportunity to talk to him about their work.

Prof. Dr. Robert Huber’s seminar, entitled “Beauty and Fitness for Purpose: the architecture of proteins, the building blocks of life”, was very interesting. He presented a synopsis of Crystallography history, pointing out the most important and critical land marks, as well as its importance in many fields, including chemistry, physics, biology and medicine. Prof. Dr. Huber showed his relevant contributions to the field, and how he helped to decipher the process of photosynthesis, for which he was honoured with the 1988 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Prof. Dr. Huber has also showed research done by two biotechnology companies, of which he is co-founder.

The exhibition “Crystallography for Humankind” was inaugurated straight after the seminar by Prof. Dr. Huber, in the atrium of Building VII. Here, Ana Luísa Carvalho announced the winners of the photographic competition on “Crystals & Symmetry in Art, Science and Life”. The first prize went to Carlos Lopes de Oliveira, the second one to Carlos João e João Borges, and the third prize to Alan Phillips. Patrícia Marta won an honourable mention. Congratulations to the winners for their beautiful and original photographs.

Take the opportunity and go to see the exhibition, and the beautiful pictures from the photographic contest.
