Methods To Access Heterocycles Containing Oxygen and Nitrogen

Host: Maria Manuel Marques, LAQV

Abstract
Heterocycles are present in a great diversity of natural products and/or bioactive compounds. They are also present in ligands, dyes, materials, etc. Due to the importance of these cyclic compounds, the development of chemoselective, efficient and versatile methods is one of the main area of research and it is worth noting that, in the literature, two third of the publications are related to heterocycles.
In this lecture, different methods will be presented to functionalize and construct  heterocycles containing oxygen and nitrogen and we will show that transition metals  such as iron, cobalt, rhodium and gold are appropriate to realize either the functionalization of heterocycles or to induce a cyclization to built up heterocyclic skeletons.
On the other hand, we will show that rearrangements of heterocycles are very useful methods to access functionalized heterocycles and by using thermal reactions and we will show how we can avoid high dilution to construct macrocycles.

Short Bio
Professor Janine Cossy graduated from the University of Reims working under the supervision of Prof. Jean-Pierre Pète. After a postdoctoral stay with Prof. Barry Trost (1980-1982) at the University of Wisconsin, she returned to Reims where she became Director of Research of the CNRS in 1990. The same year, she moved to Paris to become Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Ecole Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles de la Ville de Paris (ESPCI ParisTech). She has published over 450 articles and filed thirteen patents in the field of synthetic organic chemistry and natural product synthesis. She is Associate Editor at Organic Letters since 2005. In 2017, she was elected at the french Académie des Sciences.
