Integrated Master in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering

Started in the academic year 2006/2007. The minimum number of credits to obtain a Master's degree is 300 (5 years).  The Master's is accredited by the Ordem dos Engenheiros and the FEANI (European Federation of National Engineering Associations) in order to assign the EUR ING title (European Engineer). Recently received accreditation by A3ES.

Objectives

The goal of the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Master's program is to develop a deep understanding of scientific, mathematical and engineering principles representing the foundations of technological processes through which several industry products are manufactured. For this purpose, students receive higher education with a solid fundamental background in several fields of scientific and technological innovation.

Students are welcomed into a center of excellence in Green Chemistry, a highly qualified scientific environment with international recognition. IBET, the largest Portuguese platform of university/industry collaboration in the field of biotechnology, is also a partner of the Master’s program

The curriculum of the MSc has a broad spectrum with a modular and flexible structure.

The first three years focus, mainly, in the scientific disciplines of mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics, introducing gradually the basic concepts of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, allowing the Bachelor’s degree in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Sciences to be obtained in the end of the 6th semester (180 ECTS).

In the last two years, students complement, deepen and integrate the skills previously acquired in the areas of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering.

In the last semester students will become trainees in a company of the private sector or will realize a research project in a R&D center, either national or European (SOCRATES / ERASMUS), performing a dissertation.

The MSc in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering trains engineers with an international profile.

The Chemical Industry provides 6% of European employment and their products make part of our everyday life. The Biotechnology industry is rapidly expanding, with a future based on innovation and qualification of human resources.

The main concern of these industries is the expected shortage of highly skilled engineers in the near future. Engineers of Chemical/Biochemical Engineering of FCT NOVA will find a European market very receptive to their qualifications.

Some companies for which recent graduates of the Master’s in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering program of FCT NOVA are working include: Galp, EDP, Repsol, Hovione, GlaxoSmithKline, Veolia, Accenture, Procter & Gamble, Sonay, Fisipe, Resiquímica - Chemical Resins, Agro Sapec, Atral - Cipan, Tagol/Sovena, among others.
