Gulbenkian New Talents Scholarships: an opportunity for Chemistry students to take their first steps in research

14-09-2026

Students in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Pharmacy and related fields once again have the opportunity to apply for the Gulbenkian New Talents Scholarships, promoted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

The programme annually supports outstanding higher education students in Portugal, with the aim of promoting their talent and encouraging early involvement in scientific research.

In recent years, the Chemistry area has been awarded around 16 to 17 scholarships per year. Increasing participation from the chemistry community is therefore essential to strengthen the representation of the field and contribute to an increase in the number of scholarships awarded.

In addition to financial support, the Gulbenkian New Talents Scholarships provide students with an opportunity to further their academic and scientific training, undertake activities relevant to their academic and scientific development, and receive additional encouragement to develop their talent.

Who can apply?

For the 2026 edition, applications are open to students enrolled for the 2026/2027 academic year at a Portuguese higher education institution who are:

  • in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a Bachelor’s degree or Integrated Master’s degree; or
  • in the 1st year of a Master’s degree.

Applicants must have an average grade of at least 16.5/20, without rounding, based on the courses completed in higher education up to the date of application.

The scholarships support the continuation of studies and activities considered relevant to the development of the scholarship holder’s talent, and may play an important role in building an academic and scientific career of excellence.

Applications open until 30 September

Applications for the 2026 edition opened on 1 September and will remain open until 3:00 p.m. on 30 September 2026.

The Department of Chemistry at NOVA FCT encourages all eligible students to learn more about this opportunity and submit their applications.
