The European Olympiad of Experimental Science (EOES) is an annual scientific competition for young people from the European Union under the age of 17, with an emphasis on skills in the subjects of biology, physics, and chemistry. These Olympiads focus primarily on experimental skills, such as the correct processing of information, handling equipment, carrying out experiments, and collecting data, although theoretical knowledge is also highly relevant.
The Portuguese delegation participating in the European Olympiad of Experimental Science 2026 (EOES 2026) achieved an impressive 8th and 16th place among 46 teams, corresponding to two silver medals. It is also worth highlighting the work carried out over the last three years (6 teams), which has resulted in the achievement of 1 gold medal and 4 silver medals, with 4 of the teams ranking in the first quartile (top 25%) of all competing teams. Furthermore, in a country ranking (adding together the positions of each team), Portugal achieved an excellent 4th place, behind only Germany, Slovenia, and Estonia. The students’ results are a source of pride and reflect the dedication and hard work of everyone involved.
These results were achieved with the support of José Esperança (LAQV-REQUIMTE, NOVA FCT), Chemistry mentor appointed by the Portuguese Chemical Society, João Cruz (LIBPhys, NOVA FCT), Physics mentor appointed by the Portuguese Physical Society, and Pedro Oliveira (Order of Biologists), Biology mentor. The teams were coordinated by Catarina Ramos from EduQA – Institute of Education, Quality and Assessment. The mentors involved organize the selection session, preparation sessions, and accompany the students during the European competition. Special thanks are also due to the colleagues who assisted in the preparation sessions, namely Alice Pereira, João Lima, João Sotomayor, Pedro Moura, Paulo Ribeiro, Sérgio Filipe, Margarida Castro Caldas, Carla Pinheiro, and Margarida Roque.
